Episode Fifty-One: The Gatton Murders
On December 26 1898, three members of the Murphy family are heading towards a festive dance they had helped organise in Gatton, Queensland. On a deserted, moonlit road, they are ambushed. Their horse is hilled and the three siblings are taken to a remote paddock where they are brutally murdered.
A bungled investigation due to lack of resources follows and the remaining Murphy family closes ranks due to unfavourable rumours. Fingers are pointed at several suspects due to theories of revenge and unrequited love.
Almost 120 years later, this crime remains unsolved making it one of Australia's longest running cold cases.
